Curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

-

President Chandrikapersad Santokhi on Saturday night announced that the curfew will start earlier at night and that everybody must stay at home from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. in order to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. It also is not allowed for more than 5 people to gather in groups.

President Santokhi on Saturday night addressed the nation for the very first time as the new head of state. He explained that the government is concerned about the growing number of infections that are reported every day.

The spike is being reported in the districts Marowijne, Sipaliwini, Paramaribo, Wanica and Para.

The infections reportedly take place at locations where many people assemble. As a result of the growing number of infections there is a shortage of facilities where patients can be put in isolation. If this keeps up, the only option will be to let people isolate themselves in their homes. “The risk of a further spread of the virus will only increase because of this.”

The new president explained that the new measures are aimed at keeping the virus under control. The curfew will be in effect from July 26 until August 10. Everybody is expected to cover their mouth and nose while maintaining a distance of 1.5 meter from each other. People are also expected to regularly disinfect their hands. The new head of state made it clear that restaurants and other food houses must only provide takeout service. Only restaurants with a terrace and enough space are allowed to let their clients consume the food on the spot as long as everybody sticks to the COVID19 rules. Sports schools and centers must remain closed until further notice. Sports where players have physical contact are prohibited. Outdoor sports activities are given the green light. Casinos, bars, night clubs, dance clubs and brothels must also remain closed. Hair salons barbershops and physical therapy clinics are allowed to be open for business but must stick to the COVID19 measures. Markets will also remain open. Operation Drin Dresi Wakti Siki will continue. “The government will hold talks with the various sectors and organizations this week in order to adjust or renew existing protocols.”
