Fireworks period could be shortened

-

“The period when fireworks can be sold and lit will most likely be shortened this year,” said Justice and Police Minister Kenneth Amoksi in an interview with Times of Suriname. Health Minister Amar Ramadhin had previously indicated that surveillance would be beefed up during the fireworks period because of the COVID-19 situation. In the past the fireworks period started on December 27 and ended on January 2. Minister Amoksi pointed out that this period will be cut short with a few days because of the COVID-19 situation in the country. People are no longer allowed to assemble in large numbers at one location. This measure is aimed at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus. “A committee is currently addressing the issue.” Reports indicate that 41 shipping containers that contain fireworks have reached Suriname. Each of these containers is 40 feet long. Fire Department Spokesman Olton Pinas told Times of Suriname that banned fireworks have not been imported. In the past more than 60 containers were imported. There has also been a drastic drop in the number of request from retailers to sell fireworks. On December 19 the Fire Department Suriname (KBS) will start giving tips on how to handle fireworks carefully. “The objective is to reduce the number of fireworks victims.” In December 2019 and January 2020 there were 10 fireworks victims in total.
