Officials beef up border security along eastern border

-

Officials have beefed up border security along the eastern border after reports indicated and confirmed that many illegal ‘immigrants’ from neighboring French Guiana had crossed the river to reach Suriname in the past couple of days. Many of these people work in the gold mining fields but return home in December to spend New Year’s Eve with their relatives. The officials want to put a stop to the flow of people from neighboring French Guiana to Suriname. “The border is still closed so everybody who is caught entering the country illegally even Surinamese nationals are labelled as illegal immigrants who increase the COVID-19-infectionrisk. There has once again been a rise in the number of COVID-19cases in French Guiana so if we do not take swift action we will also exerience a hike in the number of cases,” said Health Minister Amar Ramadhin. Securing the eastern border is not a simple task.

Ruben Ramautar from the National Army pointed out that there are constantly conusltations with the French and that representatives from the army, the police and customs work closely together to keep the situation under control
