“People commit character assassination on Facebook”

-

“People are committing character assassination on Facebook,” said AttorneyatLaw Irene Lalji who finds it terrible that people insulted her on Facebook after a picture of her was published. She was mentioned as one of the attorneys of former Finance Minister Gillmore Hoefdraad.

Lalji explained that “people are entitled to freedom of speech because we live in a constitutional state and in a democracy.” “However, we forget that there are limits to the right to freedom of speech.” When people cross that line they are guilty of libel, slander and insult. People reportedly commented on a picture of her that was put on Facebook. She deems those comments insults. “If I had pressed charges against those people, they would have faced the consequences.” The defense attorney explained that Facebook has become a platform for hate, racial discrimination, slander, libel and insults. “People who do not make their payments are also pilloried on Facebook. Even companies are taken apart. We must stop with this,” said Lalji. AttorneyatLaw Murwin Dubois explained that people keep forgetting that “everybody is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.” “People do not take into account the fact that character assassination is horrible,” said Dubois. Lalji made it clear that she is not a loyalist of any political party. “First of all we are all human. A judicial game takes place in the courtroom,” said Lalji who explained that the prosecutor and the defense attorneys are the players. “In the end the judge makes an objective decision. The attorney also does her job well because she has taken an oath.” Lalji explained that each attorney utilizes the options that are mentioned in the code of criminal procedure. “People must become aware of this.” The Collins Dictionary defines character assassination as a deliberate attempt to destroy someone’s reputation, especially by criticizing them in an unfair and dishonest way when they are not present.
