Bronze medal for Eswa­tini in Re­gion V games

STeam Eswa­tini erupted in un­bri­dled joy yes­ter­day as ju­doka Michelle Shen won the coun­try its first medal in the on­go­ing Re­gion 5 Games in Gaborone, Botswana.

Shen was com­pet­ing in the mixed cat­e­gory Un­der-63kg and de­fied the odds af­ter felling an An­gola op­po­nent to bring back home the medal and the first for the trav­el­ling side.

"She has made us so proud as a coun­try and we take a bow for her. How­ever, I think this is just a first of many to come from this team. All the ath­letes are giv­ing it their best shot and this team is still go­ing to cause peo­ple so many prob­lems, “Nti­wane said.

Mean­while, Nti­wane dis­closed t hat t he ea­gerly an­tic­i­pated en­counter in ladies foot­ball pit­ting Eswa­tini against South Africa was can­celled with only 36min­utes played.

"A heavy down­pour en­sured that the clash was called off. It had been hot since were ar­rived here so it was bound to rain. The game will now be re­played to­mor­row (to­day)," he said.
