Swazi Observer - - NATIONAL NEWS - By Samkelisiwe Khoza

THERE were 107 cases of abuse reported in just two months.

According to data collected from the Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA), 19 females were sexually abused in the months of October and November with one male teenager.

SWAGAA Communications and Advocacy Officer Silindele Nxumalo said at least one in five women aged 15 to 49 are physically abused by their partners.

She said the country is known as a peaceful one, however, the high incidence of violence had detrimental effects on peace and security as well as its effects on human development prospects.

She noted with concern that most female victims of intimate partner violence were previously victimised by the same offender. Nxumalo added that not a day goes by without news reports of gruesome reports of violence and other cases which go unreported.

Nxumalo said most Emaswati still hang on to tendlu the tibi mentality, which leads to uncountable number of violence incidences never reported. She said families should stop protecting perpetrators and communities should also come up with means to create platforms of discussions and also use traditional systems to protect survivors.

Moreover, she shared that the two months experienced an excessive number of neglect cases, of the 107 reported abuse cases, 52 fell under neglect abuse.

She elaborated that neglect is referred to the ongoing failure to meet a child's basic needs and is the most common form of child abuse. The officer said a child may be left hungry or dirty, without adequate clothing, shelter, supervision, medical or health care.

“A child who's neglected will often suffer from other abuse as well. Neglect is dangerous and can cause serious, long-term damage, even death,” Nxumalo added that under neglect abuse, a child may be put in danger or not protected from physical or emotional harm. She also said they may not get the love, care and attention they need from their parents.

Meanwhile, Nxumalo urged the nation to report all sorts of abuse to the police, SWAGAA and other abuse and anti-violence centres. Type of abuse Females Males Total Physical 10 6 16 Sexual 19 1 20 Neglect 28 24 52 Emotional 12 7 19 TOTAL - 107
