Finally, Tindvuna, Bucopho get their pay
IT was all smiles for some of the politicians who are now in office (Tindvuna Tetinkhundla and Bucopho) as they received their first payment on Tuesday.
In the Shiselweni region, the cheques were brought to the regional administration offices but the politicians started fetching them the following day.
A number of the politicians were seen flocking to the regional administration offices yesterday to get their cheques. The politicians arrived at different intervals and those who are serving their first term had their cheques reflecting a two months payment (October and November) while those who have bounced back received the November salary only because they also received salaries in October.
Some of those who were interviewed said they were relieved to be paid but were not happy.
What was making them unhappy was that they needed to deposit the cheques and that means waiting several days before the cheques can be cashed.
“The seven day wait before cashing the cheque is too long for some of us. Our salaries should be deposited in our bank accounts, not using this mode of payment. It’s an old system to be paid via a cheque,” commented some of the politicians.
Others expressed mixed feelings about the money they received which they dubbed ‘peanuts’.
“I have seen that for Bucopho, the cheques reflect a sum of E5 000 and not over E6 000. For Indvuna Yenkhundla, the cheques reflect a payment of around E7 000,” said one of the politicians who was among those who got his cheque.
Another politician did not hide how unhappy he was with the salary cheque, saying if it was what he would earn monthly for the next five years, he will not bother seeking another term in 2023.
“As much as it’s not the money that made me stand for elections, this salary, in all honesty, is way too little,” said one Bucopho.
