Arcadia – A Paradise Lost
In one sense, Arcadia is just a patch of Greece with a lot of hills. However, in an artistic sense, it reaches for much more. It’s the traditional home of the god of the wilderness, Pan, so it’s historically been a symbol of unspoiled nature, and in the minds of the artists of the Renaissance it was a world of fantasy. Those fantasies they housed in their minds leaked out into their paintings, and Arcadia was born again in their work. This exhibition at Nationalmuseet houses some of the finest examples of this trend, featuring works from the likes of Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa and taking the
viewer through the story of artistic Arcadia.
