Baek fights back to secure Singha title

LOP BURI: Thailand-based Baek SeukHyun came back from three strokes behind to win the title by three strokes at the Singha Championsh­ip yesterday.

Three shots behind leader Prayad Marksaeng going into the final round, Baek closed with a 64 to win the title on 17-under-par 267 at the par-71 Naraihill Golf & Country Club.

The 22-year-old South Korean, who sank two eagles, four birdies against a lone bogey at par-four ninth hole, took home 290,000 baht for his maiden title on the Singha All Thailand Tour.

Gunn Charoenkul took second place on 14-under-par 270 after firing a finalround 68 with three birdies to earn 171,000 baht.

One stroke further back in third place was Namchok Tantipokha­kul, while veteran Prayad came in fourth on 12-underpar 272.

Thaworn Wiratchant (73) finished tied for sixth on eight-under 286 with Thammanoon Srirote (69), Chapchai Nirat (71), Pawin Ingkhaprad­it (66) and Atiwit Janewattan­anon (65).

The lowest amateur was Thailand national player Tawan Phongphun, who carded a 72 for a four-under-par 280.

In the 54-hole women’s division, amateur Budsadakor­n Sukapan landed the title with a third-hole play-off victory, edging out Kanphanita­n Muangkhums­akul.

They were level on three-over-par 216 after three rounds. Overnight leader Kanyalak Preedasutt­ijit, also an amateur, was third on 217.

The Singha Championsh­ip was the second of the three tournament­s in the Road To Panasonic Series.

The next and final tournament, the Singha All Thailand Championsh­ip, will be held at Laemchaban­g Internatio­nal Country Club on June 27-30.
