Two wheels better

- ANDREW C

It was encouraging to see 20,000 cyclists take part in the car-free day on Sunday, including Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra and Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt. They suggested holding the event every month to ‘‘strengthen its campaign for more use of public transport and bicycles’’.

Currently, it is a real challenge to cycle through downtown Bangkok on weekdays, as there are so few bike paths.

One solution would be to create wide paths along canals for bikes and pedestrians alike. I attempted to cycle along Khlong Saen Saep on Sunday, but it was nearly impossible with all the obstructions and missing segments.

This would be a fantastic commuter route for cyclists into town along Ramkhamhaeng and Phetchaburi roads.
