Dance, then, wherever you may be
Gravity-defying routines, modern movements and internationally acclaimed choreographers are set to thrill audiences during the International Dance Festival 2013.
Presented by the Friends of the Arts Foundation, Unesco (Bangkok) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the event, now in its 13th year, will be held under the theme ‘‘The Road to Asean’’.
Dance companies from around the world will participate, and one of the highlights is expected to be The Vertical Dance Company Il Posto from Italy. The company, conceived in 1994 as an interaction between dance, music and architecture, might even change the audience’s perspective on the artform as they defy gravity with their distinctive aerial choreography.
Legendary Israeli choreographer and dancer Rina Schenfeld and her company, The Rina Schenfeld Dance Theater, are also set to return. Versatile and accomplished in both classical ballet and modern dance, Schenfeld has been hailed as one of the most sumptuous modern dancers by The New York Times.
The programme includes the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet’s modern dance company, made up of 20 dancers whose strong and vibrant physical language has placed them at the cutting edge. Zen Dance are coming from South Korea, while Maya Dance Theatre from Singapore and 18 Monkeys Dance Theatre from Thailand are among the many others set to perform.
A second programme of events will include workshops conducted by dancing professionals, masterclasses led by international choreographers (suitable for experienced dance students and professional artists alike) and the Young Talent Stage where upcoming artists and choreographers can stage their work. There will also be a visual arts exhibition and film screenings.
The International Dance Festival 2013 will be held from Nov 21 to Dec 5 at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre and from Dec 2 to 8 at Chiang Mai University’s Arts Centre in Chiang Mai. There will also be a two-day symposium on Nov 22 and 23 on creativity and the cultural industry, in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Performing Arts Network and Unesco (Bangkok).
