Monumental photography competition seeks entries

The international photo contest Wiki Loves Monuments is calling for entries from Thailand.

Billed as the world’s largest photography competition, Wiki Loves Monuments promotes visual documentation of national heritage and historical sites, and encourages free-license photos for shared knowledge (with full recognition of the photographer).

The rules are simple: Check the list of 8,500 national heritage sites as recognised by the Fine Arts Department — which contains most of the familiar landmarks around the country — then go out and take pictures of them, or you can submit photos of these places you have taken in the past.

The deadline for submissions is Sept 30 through the Wiki Loves Monuments section of the commons.wikimedia.org website. Entry to the contest is free.

Ten winners from Thailand will be selected to enter the international competition. The winners from the domestic round will receive a certificate of recognition, and in the international round the prize is worth up to 4,000 (168,000 baht).

The first Wiki Loves Monuments competition took place in 2010 in the Netherlands with 12,500 submissions. The success prompted the organiser to expand and in 2011, 18 countries in Europe joined the contest and more than 170,000 pictures were submitted, entering the Guinness Book Of Records.
