Thai men setting sights on quarter-finals
Thailand hope to reach the quarter-finals at the 17th Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship in the UAE next week.
The biennial tournament is scheduled from Sept 28-Oct 8 and Thai fans should not expect the men’s team to emulate the success of their female compatriots.
‘‘Just to qualify for the quarter-finals will be a great result for us,’’ said Shanrit Wongprasert, an official at the Volleyball Association of Thailand.
The women’s team claimed their second Asian title in Nakhon Ratchasima last week when they stunned world No.3 Japan in the final.
Shanrit, who is also a member of the FIVB Board of Administration, said that the association had the same structure in running the men’s team. But he insisted Thailand’s men were at a physical disadvantage against taller opponents.
‘‘Standing at less than 190cm, our men’s players are not tall enough to compete with foreigners who all are more than 200cm tall,’’ he said.
‘‘But for the women’s team, it is not such a big gap.’’
