-

NEW YORK: Todd Bowles, who spent the past season as an Arizona Cardinals assistant coach, has been named head coach of the New York Jets, the National Football League team announced on Wednesday.

The 51-year-old Bowles becomes the 18th head coach in Jets’ franchise history, replacing Rex Ryan who was fired on Dec 29.

Details of his contract were not released but US media reported he is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Jets who slumped to a 4-12 record last season.

After serving as interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2011, Bowles was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles the following season before taking the same job with the Cardinals beginning in 2013.

Bowles was also a secondary coach for the Jets, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys before taking over Miami’s defensive backfield starting in 2008.

Bowles played 117 NFL games as a defensive back over eight seasons with Washington and San Francisco and was a part of the Washington’s 1987 Super Bowl team.
