FROM PARIS WITH LOVE
“À Paris”, Ink & Lion Cafe, Feb 13-Mar 17
In search of inspiration, Peerapat Wimolrungkarat travelled to the French capital in 2013. He tells us about his 17-day journey, which is documented in the exhibition “À Paris” (translating into “In Paris”).
PARIS: I went to Paris merely to seek inspiration. After watching the movie Mood
Indigo, I wanted to learn and fully engage the Parisian lifestyle. I’d been there before, in 2012, but like other tourists my itinerary was so packed that I could hardly enjoy anything thoroughly. This time, I intended to allow myself to explore, watch people and enjoy the spots where locals go. The pictures that I took were all candid shots. They captured the Parisian way of life in an honest and spontaneous way. I knew none of the people and I didn’t speak the language. The challenge was to seize moments that happened at that particular point in time. I didn’t think my photos were good until someone suggested I showcase them in an exhibition.
ROLLEIFLEX: I used a Rolleiflex to take these photos. I used a film camera as it allows me to think before I press the shutter button. Each roll of film and printing each photo costs money. It is totally different when you use a digital camera, because you can take an almost endless number of images. With a traditional film camera, you need that right angle and right moment to shoot that one picture.
B&W: All of these images are in black and white because I want the audience to focus on the message each picture aims to convey. I don’t want colours to distract them. Also, I want these pictures to last.
ROMANCE: To me, Paris is a romantic city, but it’s not necessarily romance in the sense of love. It’s about human relationships, life and optimism. I spent time to take a detailed look into the city. I went to random places. I felt every step I took in Paris was an aesthetic experience. The ambience, architecture, art and culture all complement one another and are all tasteful.
BANGKOK: Our city is also romantic in a subjective sense. It depends on each person’s memories and preferences. To me, the most romantic part of the capital is Ratchadamnoen Avenue, as I love the old charm and classic architecture along it.
