Ex-KMITL rector throws open home

-

The former rector of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) insists he is not implicated in the 1.5-billionbaht KMITL embezzlement scandal.

In an attempt to prove his innocence, he yesterday provided media outlets with access to his property and assets.

Thawil Phuengma, a suspect in the KMITL fraud scandal, invited reporters to attend his home and inspect his belongings.

His two-storey house covers a 220 square metre area with 110 square metres of living space and the rest is for a garage.

The wealth is inherited, Mr Thawil said, adding he owned the property and assets before he was appointed as the KMITL’s rector.

He said he also used to owe the KMITL cooperative more than 1.1 million baht.

Mr Thawil also showed to the media a financial document he had submitted to the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

According to the document, which he submitted in 2009 before he took the rector’s position, he had a net worth of 86 million baht.

He said after he stepped down from the rectorship in late 2013, his declared net worth was 86.1 million baht. One year later he declared his assets again with a 200,000 baht drop in his net worth.

According to the document, he has 604,575.16 baht in his bank accounts and his wife has 49,519.05 baht.

He owns lands in different provinces, with an estimate value of 46.1 million baht.

Some 13 plots of land are in Lat Krabang district in Bangkok, three in Kanchanaburi, three in Nonthaburi and one each in Ratchaburi, Chachoengsao and Chon Buri.

He also owns one house with an estimated value of 12 million baht and two apartments worth 20 million baht.

He has five vehicles that include four cars and one motorcycle, worth an estimated total of 2 million baht.

Mr Thawi said most of his land plots are inherited and he had sold some of them and earned a big profit.

He had also invested in land, town lots and gold ornaments which had earned good returns.

He also makes money from a crimeprevention business and rental fees.

Mr Thawil was charged with theft, falsifying documents, abuse of power, negligence of duty, and money laundering.

He denies the allegations. He was released on 5-million-baht bail.
