Thanyapura plans B300m expansion

- CHADAMAS CHINMANEEVONG

Sports training centre operator Thanyapura Phuket will spend 300 million baht to expand its facilities on the resort island in a bid to double its revenue and strengthen its market position.

President and chief executive Philipp Graf von Hardenberg said there were few competitors in the one-stop sports training and coaching business, leaving room to grow.

New facilities include a 100-metre training pool with five lanes, the first of its kind in the world, to add to its 50-metre Olympicsize pool and 25-metre training pool; four more tennis courts, taking its total to 10; a wellness centre; 14 Thai villas; and another building with 100 rooms. All these facilities will be completed over the next three years.

Thanyapura is confident the expansion will help to double its revenue in the next three years, as the facilities will support each other. Main revenue will come from hotel business (about 50%), followed by the wellness centre and sports academy.

The new pool is expected to be open next February and boost sales to about 300 rooms a day.

Last year, average hotel occupancy in Phuket was 51% overall, while the rate at Thanyapura’s hotel was 59%.

Mr von Hardenberg said the expansion would increase the hotel’s average occupancy rate to 70% in 2016 from 67% estimated for this year.

First-class facilities and professional coaches for outdoor sports are Thanyapura’s core business. The venue is used as a training camp for many national athletes.

Mr von Hardenberg said the new wellness clinic would help to double the number of its main China market to 300 guests a day by 2017.

Health-conscious guests from China are the top source of business, generating 31% of room nights in 2014. Others in the top 10 are sports people from Thailand (15%), Australia (8%), Britain (5%), Hong Kong, Hungary, the US, the Netherlands, Singapore and Malaysia.

Thanyapura has 25 sporting events a year to promote not only its facilities but also Phuket province. It is focusing on the domestic market after paying attention to international markets for many years.
