Aftermonths without rain, villagers in drought-hit Ban Na Takrud village in Phetchabun’s Si Thep district on Tuesday resorted to an old ritual, placing clay figures in a sex act at the entrance of the village, Sanook. com reports.

Not long after the ritual, dark clouds gathered and they had the chance to welcome a heavy downpour, assistant village headman Prapan Ngam-lert said.

It started with a drizzle, he said, and finally it poured.

The villagers said 15 villages in this tambon were hit by the drought, the most serious in 20 years. Nearly 20,000 rai of ricefields became barren without rain and most rice crops were devastated.

They said they held all the usual rain rituals, using cats, without any result.

Then they decided to try the sex-act ritual which involves three clay figures — two are making love, and one watching, waiting for his turn.

Netizens criticised the villagers for being superstitious and said they did not believe the ritual would bring rain.

However, the villagers still went ahead, saying the effect lasts for 100 years.

The man and woman figures are named Mek (cloud) and Fon (rain) while the third figure is Mok (haze).

The swinging act is intended to make the deities embarrassed, so they bring rain to wash away those clay figures, they said.
