Award-winning poet Chiranan Pitpreecha says he was impressed with many eco-friendly aspects of the wedding between celebrity Pipat Apirakthanakorn and actress Siraphan Watanachinda.

Their “eco wedding’’ was held last Sunday at The Landmark Hotel, chosen because it was easily accessible via the BTS. Pre-wedding photos were replaced by artwork made from scraps by the bride and groom themselves.

Chiranan said she was impressed by the wedding backdrop which consisted of potted plants, not the usual wall of flowers.

“It was smart, economical and eco-friendly,’’ Chiranan wrote on her Facebook.

She said guests also benefited from the potted plants backdrop as they were asked to help dismantle the backdrop and take home what they wanted.

“It’s too bad I went there by BTS or I would have taken the big fern,’’ Chiranan wrote jokingly.

She said a pot of ferns sells for 10 to 20 baht a piece. It’s much more economical than the use of flowers, some of which must be imported and are expensive.

A wall of flowers is usually there for only a few hours. After that, the hotel or the organiser throws it away.

Demonstrating the depth of their adherence to the eco-friendly theme, Chiranan said the bride and groom would not even use tissue paper.

“When the bride was on the verge of tears, the groom quickly forbade people from handing her a tissue. Tissue is made from trees so its excessive use is not good for the earth. He pulled out a handkerchief to wipe her tears instead,’’ Chiranan wrote.

She said the wedding was also impressive in other aspects. Instead of a multi-tiered fake cake, the bride and groom chose to plant a tree to signify the start of their new life together.

Instead of a bouquet, the bride threw pockets of seed to the guests.

“Another thing I liked was the guests were asked to dress as they pleased. There was no theme and women did not need to get into long evening dresses. This suited an aunty type like me,’’ Chiranan said.
