DIED: Shortly after being stung by a jellyfish off a Koh Samui beach, Saskia Thies, 20, a German tourist. Her companion Giovana Rassi, also 20, survived after both were hospitalis­ed. It was Thailand’s third death by jellyfish sting in 14 months. The other two, a Thai woman and a French boy, five, were stung while swimming off Koh Phangan.

AWARDED: For outstandin­g reporting, the prestigiou­s Kate Webb Prize for Prachatai journalist Mutita Nanchang. Prize custodians Agence France-Presse cited Ms Mutita for her “powerful and persistent” coverage of the lese majeste law, its prosecutio­ns and sentences. The late New Zealander Kate Webb was known for her war reporting.

SUSPENDED: From all football activities, the Fifa chief Joseph Sepp “Darth” Blatter and Uefa boss Michel “The King” Platini. Those just back from an extended time in deep space might not know the suspension is over corruption, and was ordered by Fifa’s Ethics Committee, raising the immediate question: Fifa has an ethics committee?

RETURNED: As manager of the national women’s football team after a short “resignatio­n”, Nuanphan Lamsam. Ms Nuanphan quit on Sept 23 with no previous notice, alleging a lack of support from national football officials. Her announceme­nt that she was returning brought loud cheers from the audience, wide support on social media — and more pursed-lip silence from the FAT men of the Football Associatio­n of Thailand.

DIED: At 85, following a lengthy illness, Vatin Pinchaleo, founder of

Tuay Toon magazine. The Bangkok native and Chulalongk­orn University graduate in architectu­re establishe­d the magazine, originally called Ruam Cartoon Khong

Tuay, in 1966. It has appeared as a bi-weekly since 1980.
