Ah, slits and cut-outs — the very lifeline of Thai fashion houses. Come thunderstorm, heatwave or cool breeze, they always find their place here every season. Year in, year out, our local staples have always made sure Thai ladies have the sexy option to turn to. As popular and forever à la mode as they are, not all of us are made for or are skinny enough for the Milin-esque silhouettes though. The majority would probably like to leave more to the imagination too, so we’ve scoured the market for the most sophisticated slits this season, ranging from the barely-there to the flagrantly baring — but won’t have you reeking of desperation.
LEVEL 1
BLINK-AND-YOU’LL MISS: THE ONLY SON
It’s ever so subtle, but never missing at The Only Son. Cleverly hidden amidst the sharp lines and geometrically-elegant structures signature to the brand, the cut outs here are tiny, yet far from forgettable. That’s what we’ve always loved the most about The Only Son: there’s always a miniscule — but intricate and delicate — detail that really gives a fun kick to their already refined pieces. The little square hole punches on the waist and hips of trousers and dresses bring the peekaboo element to the garments just ever so discreetly. Besides that, their new techniques of weaving, knotting and twisting are on point and really give volume and dimension to pieces that can suit any occasion.
LEVEL 2
SWEET BUT STILL THERE: PATINYA
We can count on this brand to bring pastels and feminine grace to the table as always, but while being girly, there’s also a couple of cute slits and backless tops this season that should set men’s hearts a-flutter too. As if the soft, milky colour palette weren’t enough, it’s all optimistic and happy vibes with their circular shapes that make for a cute and eye-catching detail.
It is with meticulous and refined tailoring that such unconventional curves are achieved on the French lace and metallic silk that still fall nicely on the body. Round-edged skirts and dripping tops create an asymmetrical play of hemlines, where a flash of skin is a pleasant surprise that comes from a seemingly sweet outfit.
LEVEL 3
ON A MISSION: PITCHANA
If you’ve got it, flaunt it with autumn/winter offerings in “Lethal Lady”. Toeing the line between seductive and sophisticated, this second collection from Pitchana makes no secret what you’re out to get. Dangerously high slits come with a rock-inspired detail this season, where grommets line against them to give some shine to the otherwise solid-coloured dress.
As expected from the archetypal sexy vixens of the silver screen, the colour palette mostly revolves around deep, broody hues such as burgundy, midnight blue and black. There are cut outs in almost every single look — even the prudish-looking blazer with gold buttons has a femme fatale edge with its massive triangular cut out on the back. Coming in evening-worthy materials like velvet and organza, you’ll be on the same level of swank as the Bond ladies with Pitchana’s creations that will have you looking both mysterious and sensual.
