THE BREAD WINNER

Get your sandwich fix while at your workplace desk

- Jarupat Buranastidporn

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and when you’re living in Bangkok, a city that seems to have everything — apart from a branch of Pret A Manger — to curb your sandwich cravings, you look to Google for a solution.

Sure, Cafe Tartine has you covered if you’re working within the Phloenchit area and are willing to wait around for the flock of of lunchtime embassy workers to disperse. But as the year is coming to an end, you might find it rather difficult to leave your work desk, let alone take the two flights of stairs to the office canteen. This was the exact moment I had an epiphany. Why isn’t there a sandwich delivery company? Turns out there is; I was just oblivious. Enter Le Lapin. Ignore its cutesy French name — it sure knows how to make a mean sandwich.

Browsing through the website had me salivating all over my keyboard. Glance over the extensive menu — and a make-your-own option — and you’ll understand why.

You won’t need to wait until weekend markets to munch on Sloane’s famous chorizo sandwich, because one of Le Lapin’s bestsellers is, in fact, The Sloane’s chorizo sausage & Manchego cheese (B250). Indulgent, savoury and well-balanced, it combines slices of smoky chorizo, melt- ed Manchego cheese, grilled bell peppers and onion, and home-made mayonnaise. It’s perfect for when you need something substantial to fuel up for a long day.

The Mexican chicken (B240) is one delicious and spicy number. I ordered the pita bread version and it was fantastic. The chunky chicken breast is juicy and well-seasoned, topped with fresh avocado puree, two layers of Emmental cheese, chipotle sauce and house-made spicy pico de gallo (tomato salsa). The freshness of the ingredients shine through, and there’s no holding back on the spread, either, which is always a bonus.

Salads and numerous side dishes are also available. I opted for the Seasoned wedge-cut French fries (B60) and was far from disappointed. A dip in mayo and hello, it’s lunchtime heaven.

I’ve finally found my go-to gourmet sandwich shop — and it’s only a few clicks away. For those who think sandwiches are nothing but simple cold snacks unworthy of a proper meal, I urge you to hop online and be proven wrong.

Le Lapin opens Mon-Fri, 8am-8pm; Sat, 10am-8pm. Visit www.lelapinbangkok.com or call 02-6519512.
