TACOS, KIND OF

We’re on the fence about Bangkok’s newest Mexican food truck

- Mika Apichatsakol For now, the truck is likely be parked at one of two spots: Tha Maharaj and the Villa at Ari BTS. Visit fb.com/taconebkk or call 085-116-1222 to find out. Ta’cone opens daily, from 11am to 8pm.

The latest grab-and-go taco joint to grace the scene is the Ta’cone truck, run by childhood best friends Poom and Nuch. As can be expected from a food truck, the menu is kept simple. But I really I wasn’t expecting tacos to be downsized to only soft-shell.

You heard me right. Ta’cone doesn’t offer classic hard-shell tacos, which will disappoint people who like crunch in their Mexican food. Nevertheless, the Soft-shell tacos (beef, B139; chicken, B129), come in a paper cone with a moustache printed on it, so you can pose as a cholo while eating. You can also opt for a beef or chicken Quesadilla, for the same respective prices.

The food is far from what you’d call authentic, but is suited to its market. Ta’cone is on the health-conscious side in term of ingredients, as well. Its soft-shell tacos and quesadillas barely containing cheese, Ta’cone is more accurately a meat wrap stand than a Mexican food truck. Its only saving grace is the way the meat fillings are served in chewy steak strips, rather than ground or shredded. There was also the unexpected inclusion of refried beans in the tacos, which is more of a burrito thing.

I did enjoy the overall lean and flavourful taste of Ta’cone, but am not yet a huge fan. There needs to be more delineation between types of Mexican food offered. At the moment, Ta’cone is repricing and reconsidering its offerings, meanwhile offering many promotions on social media. The owners tell us that they intend on to keep everything on the menu under B140.
