The fashion Force awakens
Geek out with our guide to Star Wars couture
If you’ve been waiting aeons for the new Star Wars film, there’s no way you’re going to see it as a covert fan. So air out that Wookiee suit, polish the metal bikini and give your Jedi robe a good lint-rollin’ sesh. I don’t know about your circles, but mine has already begun to designate cosplay characters. Intimidated? Then you better not show up underdressed.
Even if you find yourself lost amid the buzz surrounding Lucas’s famed franchise, Star Wars-inspired fashion is quite the hot topic of its own. You may have recently noticed mannequins at Jaspal sporting Storm Trooper helmets. Look closely, and you’ll see that the clothes also bear emblems from the space epic.
We applaud the Thai high street brand for taking the initiative to do something cool, different — and a little bit geeky — for the occasion, but does the line truly impress? Well, there is a galactic imbalance between menswear and womenswear. On the men’s side, you’ll see innovative pieces that take the theme to an almost couture level, as well as effortlessly cool character tees, polos and sweatshirts that any guy would want
to wear. For women, however, the collection falls flat on nondescript glamour. The few pieces that do spell out “Star Wars” stand out as desperate tie-ins rather than chic and stylish designs.
For women who’d forgo glam for the true meaning of the Force any day, I have two recommendations. Steal from the dark side — er, the men’s side — or try some of the following online stores we’ve rounded up.
www.heruniverse.com You’ll never believe who’s behind Her Universe, an online store for geeky chicks. Ashley Eckstein, who voiced Ahsoka Tano in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series, created the outlet to fill in the gap in the galaxy for sci-fi merch with a feminine flair. Highlights from the site’s selection of Star Wars apparel are the lightsaber skirt and the accessories. www.80stees.com & www.designbyhumans.com You won’t automatically lose out to someone in a full Vader get-up by wearing just a classy Star Wars tee, but it better be a good one tochance. 80sTees and Design by Human are two online apparel stores offering more than 200 Star Wars shirt designs, from witty parodies such as Yoda Santa Clause to welldesigned graphic art. Our favourites? The Storm Trooper jokes.
All three of these online stores ship to Thailand, so what are you waiting for?
Whateverv you plan on wearing to the premiere, may the Force be with you.
