A musical exploration of female identity

A classic Thai novel which was adapted into one of the longest running TV series years ago has been re-adapted for The Wife - The Musical, which will premiere at Sodsai Pantoomkomol Centre for Dramatic Arts on Jan 21 at 7.30pm. Then it will be staged every Thursday to Saturday at 7.30pm, plus a 2pm matinee on Saturday, until Jan 30.

It is the first time National Artist Krisana Asokesin’s classic novel Mia Luang (The Wife) has been adapted for the stage to highlight the issue of feminism in Thai society.

Set in Bangkok during the 1980s, the story portrays the plight of five female characters told through 30 original musical songs staged in a 360 degree arena. The issue of gender roles and gender equality is explored throughout the 2.5 hour production.

It depicts the story of Dr Vikanda and her personal struggle in reconciling her inner conflicts with societal expectations.

She represents multiple dichotomies and contradictions; surrounded by a well-connected network in society, yet emotionally isolated, exuding confident perfection on the outside while broken and melancholy on the inside.

The musical explores the definition of identity, belonging and the relationship between family collectives in high society. The narrative sheds light on thought-provoking issues of gender equality and how women are unjustly subjected to social standards that confine, shame, ridicule and blame.

The production boasts an all-star cast including Kanda Withayanuphabyuenyong (female lead of Miss Saigon at Muang Thai Rachadalai Theatre in 2012), Rachel Sasiporn Wu (student of Mariah Carey’s LA-based vocal coach and a top finalist of MTV Asia Original Song Competition 2015), Nooknick AF6 and an established ensemble cast.

The musical is performed in Thai with English subtitles. Sodsai Pantoomkomol Centre for Dramatic Arts is located at Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Bldg, Chulalongkorn University, Phaya Thai Road.
