ELEPHANTINE ART
Thai artist Xekxun Toommai will be exhibiting his acrylic on canvas paintings and stuffed acrylic on canvas 3D works at the “Elephant In The Room” at Neilson Hays Library from Jan 6-27.
The exhibition plays with the English metaphorical idiom, “elephant in the room”, which means “to ignore or to leave an obvious problem unaddressed”. In psychology, the human mind can be divided into three parts — the conscious, preconscious and unconscious. They are powerful in influencing daily activities and in maintaining the health of the mind but, unfortunately, we only observe a small amount of the their capabilities.
The artist believes that to internally examine ourselves is fundamental in our path to spiritual self-acceptance, adaptation and self-development. Through this introspection we are able to reach an equilibrium between the physical and spiritual.
The exhibition is a way for the artist to freely express his conscious and unconscious mind, and in doing so encourage others to release themselves through creativity. By expressing these frustrations, anxieties or internal conflicts, people are able to embrace and move on from the parts of the past that are holding them back so that they can move forward with a freed mind.
Neilson Hays Library is on Surawong and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9.30am-5pm. Call 02-233-1731.
