All drivers are required to fasten seat belts while passengers are required to do so if the vehicles have them: Front seat passengers are required to fasten seat belts

• Cars registered between Jan 1, 1988 - Jan 31, 2012

• Taxis registered before Jan 1, 2011

• Pickup trucks and trucks

All passengers are required to fasten seat belts

• Cars registered after Jan 31, 2012

• Taxis registered since Jan 1, 2011

For vehicles with up to 20 seats, including university shuttle buses, front seat passengers are required to fasten seat belts while a seat belt must be provided for every seat.

A taxi must have a seat belt for every seat and can take only up to four passengers.

New safety measures under the NCPO chief's order numbers 14/2017 and 15/2017 published in the Royal Gazette on Mar 21 take effect immediatel­y

FOR CARS

Authoritie­s can tow or lock the wheels of vehicles parked in prohibited areas. The car owner must pay the cost of towing or locking as well as other costs.

The driver and all passengers must use seat belts. The driver must ensure all the passengers belt up.

Failure to pay a fine will result in the car owner not being able to renew their annual plate licence registrati­on.

FOR PUBLIC VEHICLES

Licences can be revoked or suspended for six months in cases of:

• Accidents that affect confidence in public transporta­tion

• Vehicles used in illegal activities such as drug smuggling or tax evasion

• A public transport operator's failure to regulate the driver or fare collectors resulting in overloadin­g, overchargi­ng or passenger abandonmen­t

Public transport vehicles must be equipped with GPS and trip recording systems

Public vans can only carry up to 12 passengers; the weight and capacity of the gas tank must not make the van overloaded; the van must have proper safety equipment.

More insurance will be required in addition to the current compulsory Road Accident Victim Protection Act 1992 for particular types of vehicles.
