Turner hit for cycle as Nats beat Rockies

-

DENVER: Trea Turner hit for the cycle and drove in a career-high seven runs on Tuesday as the Washington Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 15-12 in Major League Baseball on Tuesday night.

Turner, who went 4-for-6 at the plate, singled in the first inning, doubled home two runs in the second, hit his first homer of the season in the sixth.

The Nationals shortstop completed the cycle — hitting for a single, double, triple and home run — with a triple that scored three runs in the seventh.

Daniel Murphy tied his career high with five runs-batted-in while going 3-for-5 with a three-run triple that highlighted a fiverun second inning against Rockies pitcher German Marquez, who was making his 2016 debut.

Marquez lasted four innings, giving up nine hits and eight runs.

Nationals starter Joe Ross didn’t qualify for the win as he worked just 4-2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits.

Turner’s triple highlighted a five-run seventh that put the Nationals ahead 15-5. But the Rockies scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning and four in the eighth when Charlie Blackmon hit a tworun homer.

It was the second cycle of the 2017 season. The San Diego Padres’ Wil Myers also hit for the cycle against the Rockies at Coors Field on April 10.

In Pittsburgh, Kyle Hendricks rediscovered his 2016 form, limiting the Pittsburgh Pirates to four hits over six innings to outduel Gerrit Cole and lead the Chicago Cubs to a 1-0 win.

Hendricks (2-1) struck out two and walked three, and Wade Davis worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save as the Cubs won for the sixth time in seven games.

Addison Russell doubled in the second off Cole (1-3) and scored when second baseman Alen Hanson airmailed first base on a Jason Heyward grounder, the Pirates’ major league-high 20th error this season. Pittsburgh has lost six of eight.

In Detroit, James McCann, Justin Upton and Alex Avila homered for Detroit — and that was before the Tigers added nine runs in the fifth inning en route to a 19-9 rout of the Seattle Mariners.

Felix Hernandez (2-2) allowed four runs in two innings in his shortest outing since 2015, and Seattle’s next two pitchers fared even worse. Detroit finished with 24 hits, 19 of which came in the first five innings.

Jordan Zimmermann (2-1) allowed five runs in six innings. Jean Segura, Danny Valencia and Nelson Cruz hit solo homers for Seattle, but that wasn’t nearly enough to keep up with Detroit’s offensive onslaught.

Clayton Kershaw struck out seven over seven innings in another impressive performance in San Francisco’s home ballpark as the Dodgers win 2-1 to end a four-game losing streak against the Giants.

Kershaw (4-1) allowed six hits and one run, walking one as he improved to 11-4 in 19 outings and 18 starts in San Francisco’s waterfront ballpark.
