A selection of 13 highly acclaimed films from 11 countries in Europe will premiere in Bangkok during the European Union Film Festival at SF World Cinema, CentralWor­ld, Ratchadaph­isek Road, from May 18-28.

Organised by the European Union Delegation in Thailand and the embassies and cultural institutes of the European Union Member States, the festival will reflect the diversity and uniqueness of European cultures and lifestyle through various genres: documentar­y, drama, comedy, thriller and romance.

It will open with Afterimage (Powidoki), a Polish drama and the final film by Andrzej Wajda. However, the opening night, on May 18, is by invitation only.

The festival will proceed with Spain In A Day, a documentar­y directed by Isabel Coixet of Spain;

The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Maki (Hymyileva Mies), debut film of Juho Kuosmanen of Finland; Kills On Wheels (Tiszta Szivvel), action comedy by Attila Till of Hungary; Nice People (Filip & Fredrik Presentera­r Trevligt Folk), a documentar­y by Anders Helgeson of Sweden; Horse Money (Cavalo Dinheiro), a drama by Pedro Costa of Portugal; Tokyo Fiancée, a romantic drama by Stefan Liberski of Belgium; and

Paradise Suite, a drama by Joost van Ginkel of the Netherland­s.

The line-up also includes Italian fantasy-superhero The Invisible Boy (Il Ragazzo Invisibile) by Gabriele Salvatores, two films from France — Louis Garrel’s romantic comedy Two Friends (Les Deux Amis), which was nominated for two awards at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015; Bertrand Bonello’s drama Nocturama; and two films from Germany:

Tour de Force (Hin Und Weg), a romantic drama by Christian Zubert, and Herbert, a drama by Thomas Stuber.

Showtime is 7pm, with a 5pm matinee on Sundays. All films are in their original languages, with Thai and English subtitles. After Bangkok, the festival will move to SFX Cinema Maya Chiang Mai, from June 3-11, and SF Cinema City at CentralPla­za Khon Kaen, from June 17-18.

Tickets cost 120 baht (80 baht for the screenings in Chiang Mai, free entry for the screenings in Khon Kaen).
