THA72 score comfortable series victory in Samui

-

>> SAMUI: Two fast windward/leeward races yesterday wrapped up a successful 16th Samui Regatta.

On the final day, the fleet were keen to go with many podium places still up for grabs.

First off were the racers in the IRC Zero and true to form, Kevin and Tom Whitcraft’s THA72 of Thailand stormed home adding another win to their tally.

Another win in the final race gave THA72 a comfortable series victory to retain the crown, while Hong Kong boat Zannekin’s impressive final two days determined their second place finish overall, ahead of Freefire, also from Hong Kong, in third.

In the IRC One, Loco from Singapore and Ramrod of Australia were tied on time in yesterday’s first race.

Despite a fifth place for Loco in the final race, it didn’t affect the overall result as they went on to claim the IRC One title.

Mandrake III finished sixth and second on the final day and jumped into second overall while Fujin were third.

It was not a great regatta for Black Baza of Hong Kong in Samui but they finished the Asian Yachting Grand Prix season at the top of the table and were crowned 2016/17 Skipper and Yacht of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Elsewhere on the racecourse, Lady Bubbly of Australia and SailQuest Hi Jinks from Thailand traded places on the final day but the overall title went to Lady Bubbly.

In the Multihull class, it was Multihull Solutions H3O of Thailand that secured the overall title in their Samui debut.

The event was hosted by the Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui and the award ceremony was presided over by Admiral Kraisorn Chansuvanich, president of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand.
