LAND OF THE FREE, HOME OF THE BREAKFAST!

THE NEW YORKER FEELS LIKE ALL THE BEST PARTS OF AMERICA

- STORY & PHOTOS CHRIS RAUFEISEN

Aquick, minute-long walk from Asoke sky train is all it takes to find The New Yorker. We recommend you start with the Everything bagel (B105). Warm, crunchy and toasted with a generous side of cream cheese. To drink we recommend the Cappuccino (B75). Steamed right in front of you, it is a refreshingly smooth and silky start to your morning; they also have freshly squeezed orange juice (B35). Among the most popular breakfast items is the Waffle (B155); and rightly so! Made with homemade batter, it is crisp, fluffy, light and buttery. Served with a side of 100% pure maple syrup, you can lather it on like a rich sugary dressing. Great for sharing.

Moving on to the big guns, make sure you make room for the American breakfast (B195). Two eggs any style, two strips of bacon and home fries along with a side of toast. The eggs and the bacon were right on the money, being true to the taste and texture you would find at any real American diner. The home fries were out of this world: thickly diced potatoes, heavily seasoned and cooked for a crisp exterior packed with herbs. The bread on the side, whether it is white, rye, or whole wheat, is made fresh daily. We couldn’t stop by an American diner and not try a slice of its apple pie, so, last but certainly not least, we took a jab at the dessert menu. One slice of Apple pie (B135) was sweet with chunky bits of apple mixed with a cinnamon filling, topped with a fluffy, flaky pie crust and whipped cream; it doesn’t get much more American than that.

If you’re missing the quick and casual stroll in breakfast experience that epitomises American morning, then the New Yorker Cafe might be your spot. For American authenticity, I would give it an A, factoring in the atmosphere, warm attitude, the menu and major league baseball playing on the flat screen. It felt like I was at my old neighbourhood, ma-and-pa diner.

The New Yorker Cafe is located at 390/1, Sukhumvit Road, and opens daily from 7am-midnight. For more info, call 088484-3397 or check out goo.gl/ZtvLUA.
