CHEESE IN TEA!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

HEEKCAA OFFERS CURIOUS CONCOCTIONS.

- STORY PORNCHAI SEREEMONGKONPOL

That may be the first thing that comes out of your mouth when you realise that there’s such a thing as cheese tea in Thailand. However, cheese teas have already become a new fad, being available at various shops in Bangkok as well as other major provinces.

Heekcaa (heek-ka) Thailand is actually an old hand to join this new trend. The brand new (three-weeks old by the time this review comes out, to be exact) cafe is the third franchisee in Asia of Hey Tea, a Chinese franchise famous for its cheese drinks, after branches in Korea and Vietnam.

The black-and-white cafe l ooks cool and modern with hexagon tiles all over the floor. Comfy armchairs are placed next to the floor-to-ceiling windows through which you can enjoy the view of a BTS coming and going as well as the recently revamped Skywalk.

Their offerings come under three sections; cheese drinks, coffee and fruit tea. We skipped the latter two because we were way more interested in getting a “cheese moustache”. Each cheese drink comes with a plastic lid so you can tilt the cup and drink up at a 45-degree angle, just so you can get both the cheese and the drink in one slurp.

Heekcaa cheese (B90) offers a prelude of foamy cheese layers which is then followed by a light and fragrant oolong tea. To us, it was surprisingly pleasant, especially with a dash of matcha powder to offer some mild bitterness.

Topped with foi thong, Cha-thai cheese (B120) is an only-in-Thailand item we think both locals and tourists should try. We dug the contrast of the very sweet Thai dessert and the cream cheese layer. The foi thong dessert was of good quality as the delicate golden lines didn’t lump up in one mess and weren’t covered in sugary bits. The Thai tea part wasn’t overly sweet either.

We reckon Mango cheese (B120) could soon be a hit. Cubes of namdokmai mango sit atop a cheese cloud and underneath them is a cup full with blended mango. It resembled mango and sticky rice but with cheese foam in lieu of coconut milk.

If this doesn’t sound crazy enough, you can add more toppings (B10), be it Milo nuggets, mango pieces, M&Ms, Kit Kats, Oreos and foi thong. We think these cheese-and-tea combos — as weird and gimmicky as they may sound — work quite well.

Heekcaa Thailand is on the second floor of Siam Discovery. It opens daily from 10am-10pm. More info, go to fb.com/ Heekcaathailand.
