THE BEAUTY TRINITY
A holistic approach in achieving a balance of mind, body and skin
On creating his signature make-up style, Yuta Sato draws out a woman’s beauty through lines more than other visual elements. “Lines are basic tools for artists. In make-up, lines can significantly transform the face by accentuating features such as eyes and lips. Shaping brows and shading in facial contouring also involve drawing lines,” said Three Cosmetic’s breezy global make-up artist.
The most prominent line on the face is probably etched by an eyeliner as many women like to flaunt classic cat eyes.
Sharply framing the eyes, the thick or thin lines capture a mesmerising gaze that sees the world more beautifully when one is in love, according to Three’s “Eye Love View” autumn/winter 2017 concept.
“Inner emotions i ncluding l ove are expressed through the eyes and love means looking at yourself through the other’s eyes,” Sato said of the romantic theme.
The Eye Love View collection includes the new Captivating Performance Fluid Eyeliner with its in-between liquid and gel texture and the brush’s elasticity allowing easy drawing of straight lines and flicking tails.
Even with the easyto-use eyeliner pen, Sato demonstrated dexterity i n precisely defining peepers. The artistry is inherited from his grandfather, who was a movie poster artist and his drawing teacher.
However, he followed his mother’s and older brother’s footsteps in becoming a make-up artist in his late teens and now has almost two decades of experience at his trade.
“I could have been an artist like my grandfather but it would be boring talking to a canvas,” joked the Tokyo-based Sato. “As a make-up artist, the face is a canvas but there’s an interaction between me and the person I’m doing make-up on. Meeting people makes the job much more interesting.”
Sato frequents Bangkok for the launch of new products and to meet customers, observing Thai women’s preference for the natural look and cosmetics with natural ingredients. Established in 2009, Three Cosmetics responded to this need through offering natural products featuring essential oils, plant oils and fats, as well as botanical extracts and waters. Furthermore, the Japanese brand takes a holistic beauty approach in achieving a balance of mind, body and skin.
Plant oils and fat are featured in the new smudge-proof eyeliner, loose eyeshadow and lip crayon while the mascara additionally contains plant extracts. The eyeliner comes in five colours, including limited-edition Greenness Ash and Sunny Copper for autumn/winter 2017.
Each season, Sato has a say in rolling out the new make-up collection, whose concept is conceived by New York-based global creative director Rie Omoto.
Basically, the make-up has to be user-friendly, he said, giving an example of how the Shimmering Color Veil Statement loose eyeshadow can effortlessly be dabbed on eyelids to impart a sparkling colour.
Moreover, the shimmering eye shadow when applied with a wet brush can serve as an eyeliner.
“Applying eye make-up can be intimidating to some women,” he noted. “But they don’t need to make it a hassle. If not the eyes, they can emphasise other features like brows, cheeks or lips, with the overall make-up look bringing out their beauty.”
