Exhibition of photography as surreal art
Kathmandu Photo Gallery presents “In Search Of Self”, an exhibition of the early work of celebrated Thai contemporary photo-artist Dow Wasiksiri from Nov 4 to Dec 28.
On display will be a dozen prints that will take viewers to explore a surreal world of the then keen student of psychology. “I wanted to create my own imaginary world perfect in its peace and beauty, with sea shells standing in for that dream of perfect peace, and the funny toilet in the sky on stilts,” says the 61-year-old artist of his early purist work.
Inspired by a dream, he also brought rocks to life in the surreal work he created three decades ago. According to psychiatrist Carl Jung, the rocks in his dream symbolise the ego. His work shows red rocks emerge from a lavatory and a swimming pool, resulting in indelibly surreal images. The rocks are very much alive with intent as they go about their adventures, in their preoccupations known only to themselves.
The exhibition also reflects his technical expertise in the pre-Photoshop days where everything had to be done by hand and meticulously pre-planned, especially when double-exposure is required.
The former successful fashion and advertising photographer, Dow has increasingly devoted his time to creating contemporary photography. His work is exhibited at international photography festivals worldwide. The opening reception is on Nov 4 at 6.30pm. Kathmandu Photo Gallery is on Pan Road (near Indian Temple), Silom, and opens Sunday and Monday from 11am-6pm.
