Quick stops 40 shots as Kings shut out Canadiens

-

>> MONTREAL: Jonathan Quick stopped 40 shots for his 46th career shut-out, Adrian Kempe and Tyler Toffoli scored 11 seconds apart in the first period and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 on Thursday night.

Anze Kopitar and Kurtis MacDermid also scored for the Western Conference-leading Kings (8-1-1), who beat the Canadiens 5-2 last week in Los Angeles.

The Canadiens (2-7-1) thought their goal-scoring woes were behind them when they beat Florida 5-1 on Tuesday night, but the bad luck and worse shooting were back in force as they outshot Los Angeles 40-27. It was Quick’s second shut-out this season and came in his 500th career game.

Quick, the 72nd overall draft pick in 2005 who led the Kings to Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014, improved his career record to 266-168-54.

Meanwhile, Phil Kessel’s 300th career goal at 1:07 minutes of overtime lifted Pittsburgh past Winnipeg 2-1.

Kessel, who also scored the overtime winner against Edmonton on Tuesday, became the 18th Americanborn layer to reach 300 career goals and the second active behind Minnesota’s Zach Parise.

Kessel stripped Patrik Laine of the puck at his own blue line and went the other way on a breakaway. Kessel, with nine points in his last seven games, snapped a wrist shot between the pads of Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck for the winner.

In New York, Pavel Buchnevich scored twice and added an assist, rookie Boo Nieves had three assists to lead the Rangers beat winless Arizona 5-2 for just their third victory of the season.

Michael Grabner had two goals, Chris Kreider also scored and Ondrej Pavelec stopped 27 shots for New York.

Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov became the seventh set of teammates in NHL history to start the season with point streaks of at least 11 games, leading surging Tampa Bay past Detroit 3-2.

In Boston, Danton Heinen scored both goals and Anton Khudobin made 36 saves to lift the Bruins past San Jose 2-1.

Radim Vrbata recorded his seventh career hat trick to lift Florida past Anaheim 7-3.

Josh Jooris scored twice, Teuvo Teravainen had a three-point night and Carolina beat Toronto 6-3.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau had a goal and two assists, Erik Karlsson added two assists and Ottawa held off Philadelphia 5-4.
