Belgian firm brings concept to Thailand

- JESUS ALCOCER

Dinner in the Sky will offer Bangkok’s first aerial dining experience, hoisting guests 50 metres in the air.

Belgium-based Dinner in the Sky has formed a partnership with Emporium Group and Uber Thailand to offer Bangkok’s first aerial dining experience.

The Dinner in the Sky concept will use a 200-tonne TSK telescopic boom to hoist 22 diners along with the table and waitstaff 50 metres into the sky.

The table will hang above The Emporium and Dinosaur Planet near Phrom Phong skytrain station.

The partnership will run from Dec 20, when the service is launched, until the end of February.

Manatase Annawat, deputy managing director of Emporium Group, declined to disclose further details of the agreement.

The venture is supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as a part of Amazing Thailand Tourism 2018, a campaign that aims to increase the average length of stay and spending by quality tourists. The campaign covers 13 core areas, including gastronomy and Mice (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions).

Dinner in the Sky will be catered by chef Gaetano Palumbo of Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit and include internationally sourced ingredients with a Thai twist.

Seats will be sold online at www.dinnerinthesky.co.th and start at 4,990 baht for weekdays and 5,390 baht for weekends. The price includes Uber transport to and from the venue.

The flights will have a duration of one hour and lift off at 6pm and 7.30pm.

Special deals will be available for the Mall Group’s platinum cardholders.

Dinner in the Sky was launched 10 years ago and now operates in 45 territories, including China, Taiwan, Japan and Macau.

Thailand is the second country in Southeast Asia to offer the experience, after Malaysia, which is where Dinner in the Sky Asia is headquartered.

“Although the deal is set for more than two months, we suggest clients book early,” Mr Manatase said. “In Malaysia bookings ran out in 48 hours.”

Thailand was chosen as the company’s second location because of its food-centric culture and high social media penetration, said Johannes Bergstorm, a representative of Dinner In The Sky Thailand.

Dinner in the Sky was launched in 2007 as a collaboration between publicist David Ghysels of Hakuna Matata, a communications agency specialising in food, and crane specialist Stefan Kerkhofs of Fun Group, a company known for amusement park installations.

The platform has also served as a venue for corporate and promotional events, as well as weddings.
