ENEMIES OF THE STATE

Public prosecutor­s have indicted street protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban and eight other leading members of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) for insurrecti­on and terrorism related to protests against the former Yingluck Shinawatra administra­tion. When the following offences were committed, Thailand was under a constituti­onal monarchy with the Yingluck administra­tion serving as a caretaker government.

Following are highlights of the charges

From Nov 23, 2013 to May 1, 2014 , the nine defendants were involved in a criminal associatio­n (Ang Yi) under th he PDRC to commit crimes against the st tate by conspiring to use force and threats s to abolish or change the constituti­on and d overthrow the legislativ­e, executive an nd judicial branches.

Inciting people across the country tot join the protests and activities aimed at t toppling the Yingluck government and d obstructin­g a general election to preve ent the formation of a new government to run the country in line with the charter.

Setting up forces, both armed and unarmed, to invade government agencies in efforts to cripple the government. There were also uses of forces to harm and threaten government officials and the general public.

Inciting the people, private sector, and government officials and state enterprise workers to go on strike and/or suspend tax payments to the government as well as invading and occupying government agencies, state enterprise offices and prov vincial halls.

Cutting C power and water supplies to seve eral key government and state enterprise agencies such as Government Hous se, the Finance Ministry, the Interior Minis stry, the Labour Ministry, the Energy Minis stry and the Government Complex.

Using various objects such as bottles, slings shots, fire bombs and guns to cause injury y and death among government officia als and other people.

Conspiring to commit terrorism by using force to cause harm to people and undermine civil liberties as well as causing serious damage to the country's telecommun­ication and fundamenta­l structures resulting in huge economic losses.

Making announceme­nts through several media channels that after removing the Yingluck government from power the group would take control of the country and appoint the prime minister and cabinet ministers, and Mr Suthep would countersig­n a royal command.
