Scarano, the TPO and a world premiere

-

The Italian Embassy’s yearlong celebration of the 150th anniversary of Italian-Thai diplomatic relations continues with the “Italian Reflection” concert performed by Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Alfonso Scarano at Mahidol University’s Prince Mahidol Hall, Salaya campus, tomorrow at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm.

The programme will feature the world premiere of Riflessi, written especially for this occasion by famed Florantine oboist and composer Arnoldo de Felice. It will be paired with one of the most iconic 20th-century guitar concertos, Fantasia Para Un Gentihombre, by Joaquin Rodrigo.

Blinded from age three, Rodrigo nevertheless managed to become a composer whose mastery of place and colour is unparalleled. Set to perform this piece will be guest soloist Hitoshi Miyashita, one of Thailand’s most gifted guitarists, currently living in Germany and a frequent TPO guest.

The repertoire also includes Symphony No.6 In B Minor Op 74 “Pathetique”, the last symphony by a great Russian composer committed to the Romantic spirit, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He conducted the premiere of this piece only nine days before his death from cholera in 1893. Some scholars have suggested that with this last work, Tchaikovsky could tell the painful and repressed story of his life in musical language — without giving up its secrets.

Tickets cost 400, 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,500 baht (half-prices for students under the age of 25) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major (visit thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456) or by calling 02-849-6565 ext 6603/4 (on weekdays) or 6624—6 (Friday until 5pm and Saturday until 2pm).
