Thunder Castle retain share of lead with Chainat victory

- TOR CHITTINAND

Defending champions Buriram United matched the Saturday night exploits of coleaders Port and Sukhothai with an impressive 2-0 Thai League 1 victory at promoted Chainat yesterday.

Port had to stage a rally to edge troublehit Ratchaburi 3-2 at their PAT Stadium, while Sukhothai were 2-1 winners at Chonburi on Saturday night.

The results prolonged the status quo as Port, Sukhothai and Buriram all held on to the top spot with nine points each.

Like the other two co-leaders, Buriram also had to work hard to earn three points and it was a two-minute burst in the second half that got the job done for the Thunder Castle.

Supachok Sarachat broke the deadlock for Buriram in the 54th minute.

Buriram capitalised on an act of sloppy defending by Chainat a little more than a minute later, when Diogo Louis Santo gleefully guided the ball into an open net to push the match out of the home team’s reach.

Bangkok United failed to get their title dream back on track as they dropped two points following a 2-2 draw against visiting Suphanburi.

Bangkok United went ahead twice through goals by Robson Fernandes and Sumanya Purisay in either half. Romulo Cabral cancelled out the first a minute into the second half and Mika Chunounsee made the second meaningless at the hour mark. Bangkok United have now dropped to ninth spot.

Chiang Rai United, who were also expected to challenge Buriram and SCG Muang Thong United, didn’t fare any better either.

Chiang Rai let a one-goal edge slip through hands at home against Police Tero, who saw Marcos Vinicius net the equaliser midway through the second half.

The hosts, who took the lead with a 16thminute goal by Nebihi Bajram, have plummeted to 10th place in the standings.

Meanwhile, hosts Nakhon Ratchasima shocked Ubon UMT United 3-1.
