Explore the works of Thai artist Vasan Sitthiket
Art enthusiasts are invited to explore the work concepts and the life as an artist and activist of prominent Thai artist Vasan Sitthiket during the “I Am You” exhibition which will kick off tomorrow and run until May 27 at the Main Gallery, 8th floor of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Pathumwan intersection.
This is the first major exhibition devoted to the full scope of the career of the 60-year-old artist whose interdisciplinary works reflect and criticise social and political movements, making him one of the country’s most socially engaged artists.
On display will be his extensive portfolios spanning from 1975 to the present day. The collection is actually a culmination of concepts from the work I Am You ( 1993) which explores the soul’s transmigration and sufferings.
The very same concept is now reinterpreted and portrayed through 100 master works covering paintings, sculptures, music, poetry, shadow puppets, performance and Facebook statuses.
Through sarcasm, satire and implicative comparison, his works are shaped and tempered to perfection by his well-versed artistic expertise in exploring various means of expression, which also include various initiatives with artist groups and activists from both private and public sectors who fight for societal, political, and environmental justice.
Both attractive and challenging, Vasan’s works have been internationally recognised. He has represented Thai artists in various international exhibitions in Australia, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and the US.
The opening ceremony is today at 6.30pm. There will also be educational activities such as curator talks, artist talks, critic talks and workshops for children. The art centre opens Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am-9pm.
