Alibaba helps push durian in Shanghai

-

Tmall Fresh and Juhuasuan have kicked off a six-day online and offline promotion for Thai tropical fruits and food products in collaboration with the Thai government.

Alibaba Group is organising a three-day online flash sale of Thai foods during the Thai Festival in Shanghai, in collaboration with various Thai government agencies.

The event is being hosted by the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Shanghai from May 18 to 20 and will feature a “first of its kind” durian buffet, among other programmes.

Alibaba-owned fresh food e-commerce platform Tmall Fresh, the official partner for the festival, will promote Thai fruits during the event in conjunction with Juhuasuan, a sales and marketing platform for flash sales under Tmall.

On May 19, the platforms will provide an overview of the 120-hour journey of fresh Monthong durians from Chanthaburi province to China. The session will also feature a demonstration by Aschariya Juntaravong, consul of the agriculture section of the consulate-general in Shanghai, and a durian tasting and Q&A session with Tmall Fresh customers.

Around 100 consumers will be able partake in the buffet of Thai durian and other fruit.

The full session will be live-streamed via Taobao, Alibaba’s social commerce app, to help promote Thai food products among prospective Chinese consumers.

“We are excited to join forces with the Tmall platform to enable more Chinese consumers to understand the beauty of Thailand’s food culture and products,” Ms Aschariya said.

“Thailand has become a top-of-mind country for millions of Chinese consumers — not only as a destination to visit but also the place of origin for some of the best food in the world,” said Joanna Zheng, category planning director of Tmall Fresh. “We are dedicated to promoting quality consumption and strengthening the agriculture industry of Thailand with opportunities to expand into new markets through our platform.”

Consumers across China will also be able to participate in a major online flash sale of fresh food products from Thailand organised by Tmall Fresh and Juhuasuan, with support from the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Shanghai and the Thai Consulate Agricultural Department.

Online promotion of the flash sale started today, but the actual sale will take place from May 21-23, covering a wide array of Thai food products, including durians, mangos, coconuts, mangosteens and shrimp.
