THE MAGIC OF BOOKS
A magic show and a book discussion will make a fun combination, for the very first book party to be presented by Goethe Institute, on Saturday, 6.30pm. The venue is Democrazy Theatre Studio, Rama IV (Soi Saphan Khu).
Held in collaboration with Sommadhi publishing house and The Paperless, a literature website, “Book Party #1: Mario And
The Magician” will open with a magic show created by Democrazy Theatre choreographer Thanapol Virulhakul and actors James Laver and Peerapol Kijreunpirumsuk.
The show is inspired by the Thai translation of Mario And The Magician, one of the masterpieces of German Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann (1875-1955). Central to the evening is a discussion of the novella.
The speakers will be book translator Assist Prof Dr Aratee Kaewsumrit and Dr
Panu Trivej. Dr Aratee studied German literature, specialising in the work of Thomas Mann. She was awarded a PhD at the University of Siegen, Germany, in 2007. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled “Asia And The Asian Motif In The Work Of Thomas Mann”. She is currently a German lecturer at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Arts.
A science lecturer at Kasetsart University, Dr Panu is passionate about literature, writing and history. He’s also a well-known translator and author. One of his most successful books is about the Weimar Republic.
The discussion will be conducted in Thai. The moderator is actress and guest lecturer for dramatic art Pattarasuda Anuman Rajadhon. There is no admission fee.
