THA72 make a perfect start

SAMUI: More than 300 sailors from Asia and beyond are in this island resort for the 17th edition of the Samui Regatta.

The finale of the 2017-18 Asian Yachting Grand Prix season is being held at the Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui on Chaweng Beach.

The event began yesterday as Thailand’s THA72 got off to a perfect start in their title defence with three straight wins in IRC Zero.

However, Hong Kong’s Zannekin pushed them hard, finishing just eight seconds behind in the first race while in the third race, the winning margin was just four seconds.

Singapore’s Wind Sikher, the 2016 winners, were second overall and ready to take advantage of any slip-up by THA72.

In IRC One, Loco of Singapore beat all opponents and sat comfortabl­y at the top of the standings with three wins.

Hong Kong’s Mandrake III were second, ahead of Australia’s Fujin (AUS).

In Performanc­e Cruising, Pattaya-based Souay1 scored two wins.

In Multihull Class, Sudu Red took the early lead in the series with two wins while Edenko, Pixalux and Sudu Grey were tied for second.

The tournament, which began in 2002, ends on Saturday.
