Mahidol University, Salaya campus July 6 at 7pm and July 7 at 4pm Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Alfonso Scarano will perform Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade during the “Princess Scheherazade” concert. Joining the orchestra to perform the two Russian masterpieces as guest soloist will be Taiwanese violinist Yu-Chien Tseng.

Celebratory concert

The Yontararak family presents a special performance titled “Music From Heaven” to celebrate the sixth anniversary of Sala Sudasiri Sobha concert hall designed by piano virtuoso Nat Yontararak. With his three child musicians, they will perform a programme of original songs composed by Gen Prem Tinsulanonda. They are arranged by Nat for piano solo, duets, two pianos, two pianos eight hands, and piano and harp by Nat himself, also in dedication to Gen Prem on the occasion of his eighth cycle birthday. Nine beautiful paintings by five great Thai artists are also available for a silent auction.

Italian comedy

The Embassy of Italy presents the “Italian Comedy In Bangkok” performed by Marco Luly, Luciana Codispoti and Roger Jenkins from the Luoghi dell’Arte company. Some of the scenes are taken from the traditional Italian “Commedia dell’Arte” and plays by Carlo Goldoni, the father of modern Italian comedy. There are also delights cooked up by the actors based on real experiences as foreigners visiting Asia for the first time. The show will repeat at Thammasat University, Tha Phra Chan campus, on July 12 at 5pm.

Madama Butterfly

Opera Siam and Bangkok Opera Foundation present Madama Butterfly, an opera in three acts by Puccini. The cast features Asean’s reigning diva Nancy Yuen in the title role, Israel Lozano and Covent Garden baritone Phillip Joll. The production will be conducted by Somtow Sucharitkul. The shows are sung in Italian. English and Thai subtitles will be provided.

Charity piano concert

The Dubois family will perform a charity piano concert as a tribute to the late Tan Mong Choo, one of Thailand’s most beloved piano teachers. The programme will feature the works by Beethoven, Prokofieff, Rachmaninoff, Ravel and Chopin. The Dubois is a family of accomplished concert pianists. Jean and Anna are professors at the Conservatory of Music in Bern, Switzerland. Their son Andre is an award-winning pianist and their daughter Rachel teaches piano in Argovia.

THEATRE Contemporary tragedy

A new version of Crimson Rose is being staged by director Pattarasuda Anuman Rajadhon. It’s based on a play of the same title by Daraka Wongsiri, one of Thailand’s most prolific modern playwrights who received the IATC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. It tells about five women living in a boarding house owned by one of them. Beneath their seemingly harmonious relationships, however, are brutal secrets like roses with thorns that prick and cut.

Nepalese drama

TK Park’s “Contemporary World Film Series” will be screening White Sun (Seto Surya), a drama/war biographical film directed by Deepak Rauniyar from Nepal that created a mega impact around the world. The movie went to top festivals and won an award at the 2016 Venice Film Festival. It comes with English subtitles.
