WHERE FASHION MEETS COFFEE

BOYY & SON CAFÉ IS SOPHISTICATED WITH A WARM VIBE

- STORY NIANNE-LYNN HENDRICKS

Bangkok isn’t short of cafes with that “something extra” and Boyy & Son is no exception. The flagship store and café, which has a huge fan following from its early days on Thong Lor, has relocated to Gaysorn Tower.

Boyy was founded more than 12 years ago by owner and designer Wannasiri “Boy” Kongman with his partner Jesse Dorsey. The designer duo are passionate about fashion, design, material searching and form, which is evident throughout the café. The name Boyy & Son, however is just the café and was after Boy had a son.

While you shop for clothes and shoes, take a break and enter the café with its pastel 70s Italian decor and American diner ambience. Sip on a Cortado (B120), which is a Spanish-style piccolo and listen to 1940s music. The space has custom made Italian terrazzo tables and booths, cushion textiles by Loro Piana and a custom painted La Marzocco FB80 coffee machine. Each booth is adorned with Hugh Findeltar’s Murano glass fish heads, which double up as table lamps for when the sun goes down, and vintage 60s Murano glass domes above the coffee bar.

Everything is matched to perfection, keeping in theme with the pastel colours — even down to the bespoke coffee machine. Crocheted, sea-themed coasters add to the extra ambience. But let’s come to the food. While choices of bakery items are minimal, they are enough for a small bite with the coffee that Boyy & Son serves. Treats are created by pastry chef Shuna Lyon from New York. The café blends three types of coffee — Thai, Indonesian and Brazilian — to create its own house blend and if you’re a caffeine addict, do not miss the Boyy café yen (B140).

The one page menu is ridiculously, reasonably priced and is affordable for everyone, students included. On a hot summer’s day, the Ice Thai Orange Recharge (B100) is sure to cool you down while boosting your immune system. Orange ice cubes with krachaii (fingerroot) is served with San Pellagrino sparkling water for a refreshing kick. The Dragon fruit juice (B150) comes in an actual hollowed out dragon fruit and makes for a pretty picture.

Though there is not much food wise on the menu, the Cookies (B60) are worth ordering. Three tiny, crunchy sea salted dusted chocolate chip cookies are served fresh out of the oven, and require an eight-minute wait. Yes, they are made to order only, and who doesn’t love warm gooey cookies? The Chocolate almond croissant (B140) is a work of art to look at against the terrazzo table. While the croissant was tasty, there is not much to write home about. If you’re a coconut lover, go for the Coconut croissant (B110), which is a delightful coconuty dose of coconut jam filling, with toasted and freshly grated coconut covering the croissant.

My favourite was the ice creams, of which you can order either one scoop (B50) or three scoops (B120). The ice cream varies and on the particular day I went, I got a scoop of dark chocolate, yuzu sorbet (my absolute fav!) and raspberry.

The big glass windows make Boyy & Son Café an excellent spot to escape to the “Italy” of yesteryear. Though there is no escape from the selfie-taking tourists!
