Nitchaon last Thai standing in singles

Nitchaon Jindapol advanced to the women’s singles quarter-finals of the BWF Singapore Open yesterday.

Second seed Nitchaon needed 34 minutes to dispose of Chloe Birch of England 21-13, 21-16 and book her last-eight berth against Chen Su-yu of Taiwan. Chen knocked out Spain’s Beatriz Corrales 20-22, 21-12, 22-20.

World No.11 Nitchaon is the only Thai left in the women’s singles event of the US$355,000 (approximat­ely 11.9 million baht) World Tour Super 500 event.

Her two compatriot­s, Pornpawee Chochuwong and Busanan Ongbamrung­phan, were sent packing yesterday.

Eighth seed Pornpawee lost to Han Yue of China 14-21, 21-15, 19-21 while Busanan fell to seventh seed Gao Fangjie of China 14-21, 15-21 in the other second round matches.

Dechapol Puavaranuk­roh and Sapsiree Taerattana­chai knocked out fourth seeds Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock of England 21-18, 25-27, 21-19 to advance to the last eight of the mixed doubles event.

The Thai duo next play world No.58 pair Chang Tak Ching and Ng Wing Yung of Hong Kong for a place in the semi-finals.

In the women’s doubles event, top seeds Jongkolpha­n Kittithara­kul and Rawinda Prajongjai marched into the last eight after beating Birch and Jenny Moore of England 22-20, 21-16.

Fourth seeds Chayanit Chaladchal­om and Phataimas Muenwong also advanced, with a 21-12, 22-20 win over Malaysia’s Goh Yea Ching and Vivian Hoo.

The Thai men’s doubles teams performed equally well yesterday.

Third seeds Tinn Isriyanat and Kittisak Namdash defeated Singapore’s Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Terry Hee Yong Kai 21-18, 21-18 to reach the last eight while Bodin Isara and Maneepong Jongjit also advanced after they beat Reginald Lee Chun Hei and Or Chin Chung of Hong Kong 21-15, 21-14.

There was no Thai left in the men’s singles event after both Pannawit Thongnuam and Khosit Phetpradab lost yesterday.

Pannawit bowed out to Chong Wei Feng of Malaysia 11-21, 16-21 while fifth seed Khosit was beaten by Taiwan’s Hsu Jen-hao 17-21, 18-21.
