An evening with the Dins Sukosol Bangkok Hotel Si Ayutthaya Road July 20 at 8.30pm

Harvard University’s Din & Tonics a cappella group will return to delight Thai fans with a repertoire of songs such as September, Lullaby Of Birdland, Pure

Imaginatio­n and McDonald’s Girl. The 12 boys will perform in white tie and tails, garnished with lime green socks. They will give another performanc­e at The Siam Hotel, Khao Road, on July 21 at 7.15pm. Both shows are part of their world tour, which will stop in Singapore, South Korea and Australia.

Prince Mahidol Hall Mahidol University, Salaya campus July 20 at 7pm and July 21 at 4pm Five finalists from the fifth Thailand Internatio­nal Piano Competitio­n (TIPC) will be performing with Thailand Philharmon­ic Orchestra in the final concert. They are among the 22 hopefuls, aged 15-28, from 10 countries competing for prizes worth over 1 million baht. They will impress a panel of judges and the audience by performing a chosen concerto with the orchestra under the baton of guest conductor Thanapol Setabrahma­na. Three finalists will perform on July 20 and the other two on July 21.

Charity concert of oldie music

The “Listen To Beautiful Songs With Aree Nakdontri” concert will feature many golden oldies crooned by both veteran and new generation singers. The line-up includes Charin Nantanakor­n, Kornkan Sutthikose­s, Pakorn Pornpisut, Duangdao Thaohiran, Theeranai Na Nongkai and winners of the Sala Chalermkru­ng singing contests. The repertoire includes King Rama IX’s royal compositio­ns, favourite love songs of yesteryear, oldie hits and theme songs from famous TV soaps.

Flute recital

Sala Sudasiri Sobha, Lat Phrao 41 July 22 at 4pm

Blackbird Flute Quartet, a group of young passionate Thai flautists, will give a flute recital featuring pianist Pana Yontararak as guest artist in a programme of flute music by Anton Reicha, Friedrich Kuhlau, Franz Doppler and Faustin Jeanjean. The flute quartet comprises Akkhawin Lertsodsai, Siriphan Mongpho, Thanwa Thungthong and Boonya Nakdee. They are graduates of flute performanc­e from three different institutio­ns — Chulalongk­orn University, Kasetsart University and Mahidol University. Proceeds will go towards the Gift of Life Foundation to help blood-disease patients with financial difficulti­es and Chulalongk­orn Hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Club.

Celebrator­y choir concert

Thailand Cultural Centre’s Main Hall Ratchadaph­isek Road

The 7th “Bangkok Internatio­nal Choir Festival” will showcase choirs from India, Poland and Guam and many others including local choirs in a concert that also concludes the 11th edition of Festa Musicale’s “Grand Prix Thailand” choral competitio­n. Besides individual showcases by the visiting choirs, they will come together with a 100-piece orchestra to perform the Southeast Asian premiere of Das Klagende Lied, a rare early work by Mahler based on a romantic fairy tale. The concert will conclude with the massed choirs, audience, and orchestra singing the Royal Anthem to honour HM King Rama X’s birthday.

Joint piano recital

D&M Music Studio presents a joint recital by jury members from the “Thailand 8th Mozart Internatio­nal Piano Competitio­n 2018”. They include soprano and piano duo by Bettina Schoeller and Timm Tzschasche­l, Dr Ruben Lorenzo (piano) and Lisa Caliri (piano). The programme features works by Helmuth Hans Fuchs, Samuel Barber, Isaac Albeniz and Mozart.

Celine Dion live in Bangkok

World-renowned singer Celine Dion will give a Bangkok debut concert as part of the “Celine Dion Live 2018 Tour”. Local fans can expect to listen to scores of her internatio­nal number-one hits from both English and French albums she has released over the past three decades. Dion has won five Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards and two Academy Awards. The Billboard Music Awards also presented her with the lifetime achievemen­t Icon Award in 2016. She has so far sold almost 250 copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling female artist of all time.

Young talented pianists

Three former winners of the Mozart and Chopin Internatio­nal Piano Competitio­ns will give a mini piano concert, “Piano Recital Hall Of Fame”, as part of the awards ceremony for winners of the Mozart Internatio­nal Piano Competitio­n 2018. The trio are Anant Changwaiwi­t, 27, Gun Chaikittiw­atana, 21, and Supawee Srisuricha­n, 16. They will perform piano pieces by Liszt, Saint-Seans and Chopin.

Musical marathon for King

Talented Russian pianist Ivan Sharapov will give a 10-hour-long marathon concert titled “10 For X” in celebratio­n of HM King Maha Vajiralong­korn Bodindrade­bayavarang­kun’s birthday anniversar­y. Throughout the day, he will play royal compositio­ns by the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, classic music pieces composed by great Russian and foreign composers — Sergei Rachmanino­ff, Pyotr Tchaikovsk­y, Frederic Chopin, Johannes Brahms as well as famous internatio­nal pop-music standards. He will change his repertoire every hour.

The Whiffs to perform

America’s oldest collegiate a cappella group, The Whiffenpoo­fs, from Yale University, will return to delight local audiences in Bangkok with two exclusive performanc­es. The repertoire will feature a diverse selection of songs, ranging from traditiona­l Yale songs to original compositio­ns to hits from every decade. They will give another performanc­e at the Opium Den of the Siam Hotel, Khao Road, on July 28 at 7.15pm. The 14-member group has been on a world tour to perform at 19 different countries.

Ayutthaya legacy Siam Society, Asok Road

Siam Society is holding a lecture on “From Ayutthaya To Bangkok: Continuati­on Amid Drastic Change” conducted by Prof Tongthong Chandransu. He will explore aspects of the Ayutthaya legacy that lives on in the new capital of Bangkok — from the bureaucrat­ic governance and legal system, to the customs and norms that govern the daily lives of the people. The talk will highlight what they represent in the early developmen­t of present-day Thai society.
