CREAMALICIOUS

ECLAIRS AND PASTRIES ARE THE STARS AT LIGHTNING CHOUX

- STORY & PHOTOS ERIC E SURBANO

When you walk into 7-Eleven and head over to their refrigerated items (usually where those quick meals and sandwiches are), you’ll find vanilla and chocolate eclairs that are pretty good. The only problem is that “cream puffs” would be the more correct term to describe them. An eclair has an elongated, oblong shape that’s filled with cream but also topped with icing, and this is the misconception that Lightning Choux is setting out to correct.

Lightning Choux, aptly named because the French word “eclair” translated to English is — you guessed it — “lightning”, has been open for only three months but you can find them on the M Floor of Siam Discovery, as well as a temporary kiosk over at the walkway between Central Chidlom and Central Embassy. Aside from drinks like coffee, tea and sodas, there are technically only two things on the menu: eclairs and choux cream pastries, all priced at B95. You have to rid yourself of the misconception that vanilla and chocolate are the only possible flavours for these pastries because boy, are you wrong.

Lightning Choux’s eclairs come in more than eight different flavours, a couple of which are available only in specific locations like the Crème brûlée eclair in Central Chidlom. And yes, Lightning Choux are serving up flavours like that. A while back, they actually had Durian eclairs but are sadly unavailable due to the fruit being out of season. There are some alternatives though if you’re feeling fruity, our favourite being the Blueberry mascarpone, which is basically a blueberry cheesecake eclair bursting with blueberry cream in every bite. If you want something that tastes a little floral — yes, floral — then Rose petal is your best bet. There’s really no other way to describe how it tastes except that it tastes “rosy”. Chocolate lovers need not fret for the Chocolate hazelnut is here to satisfy your cravings, complete with crunchy macadamia nuts and oozy chocolate. If you want something that’s classic Italian, look no further than the Tiramisu, a coffee dessert any coffee lover would vie for.

Their eclairs are jam-packed with cream and the same goes for their choux creams. What we love about their choux cream pastries is that they don’t break apart despite the huge amount of cream inside even with each bite. The pastry is not too soft nor too hard. They’ve got four different kinds and we tried the Matcha red bean, which is great for green tea lovers. But our favourite would have to be the Caramel earl grey.

Lightning Choux’s eclairs and choux cream pastries are a great dessert or snack to share with friends while chatting on a lazy afternoon or something to munch on as you walk to the BTS. True, there are many other dessert places in the city and other bakeries that do eclairs and choux creams, but we can say that we haven’t seen anyone do it the way Lightning Choux does.
