Choral competition concludes with massive choir
Choral ensembles from many countries will join hands in concert as part of the 7th Bangkok International Choir Festival at Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, today at 7pm.
Held in collaboration with Bangkok Opera Foundation, this gala concert concludes the 11th edition of Festa Musicale’s “Grand Prix Thailand” choral competition which took place in Pattaya, Chon Buri, on Saturday. This is also an opportunity to mark the birthday of HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun last Sunday with an international gathering of musicians.
Participating choirs will be KC Lights from India, the Latte Tones from Guam (USA) and the Academic Choir of Warsaw University of Technology, Poland. The night will also feature local choirs including Siam Orpheus Choir, Choir of Russian Orthodox Cathedral Bangkok, Bangkok Music Society and Calliope Chamber Choir.
The visiting choirs will give individual showcases featuring choir music from around the world. As a highlight, all choirs will finally come together with a 100-piece orchestra to perform the Southeast Asian premiere of Das Klagende Lied, a rare, early work by Mahler based on a romantic fairy tale.
The performance requires not only a large orchestra but a second, off-stage orchestra and soloists as well as a large choir. Somtow Sucharitkul will conduct the Mahler piece. Soloists will include Barbara Zion, Nicholas Malakul and Jak Cholvijarn.
The concert will conclude with the Royal Anthem to honour the King’s birthday.
