SO MANY STYLES

How one particular brand is meeting all your make-up needs

When Thitiphan Viriyajit started out as a make-up artist 20 years ago, he observed how many women were intimidated about applying make-up. Today, tons of YouTube beauty tutorials — step by step — help women do their own make-up. Moreover, the cosmetics industry has developed easy-to-use products and tools to do the job.

“There’s a plethora of beauty products out there, and women need to pick the right ones to create flattering looks for their age, skin tone and match the make-up with the occasion,” said Thitiphan, Urban Decay national make-up artist.

There’s a time and place for everything; so there is for wearing make-up. Thitiphan and his team thus demonstrated the how-tos to get five make-up styles for the everyday, dating, occasional, party and professional looks, at The Palette Master event held at Sephora, the EmQuartier.

The American brand is best known for its Naked series that shows how to play with popping neutrals on peepers. The iconic eyeshadow palettes along with the newly-launched Born to Run palette, were used in the demo to vary the eye make-up of each look.

Naked 1, 2, 3 and Naked Heat palettes respectively contain 12 bronze-, taupe-, rose-, and amber-hued eyeshadows in various textures and finishes.

“The first Naked palette was launched in 2010 and is still a best-seller, and I would recommend it to beginners. They can then step up to using shades from Naked 2. Naked 3 sells like hotcakes here, since the rose hues are so pretty and easy to apply,” said Thitiphan, who holds a make-up diploma and completed professional training at the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles.

One of the tricks of the trade is to spritz a make-up setting spray on the brush before applying eyeshadow, for long-lasting and extra-pigmented effects.

Shades from the Born to Run palette dressed up the eyes for the party look, with lower lids defined in a different colour from those on upper lids to punch up and add more dimension to the look.

Featuring 21 shades in different textures and finishes, such as matte, metallic and shimmer, the Born to Run palette is inspired by how Urban Decay’s globetrotting co-founder and chief creative officer, Wende Zomnir, likes to change her make-up from one destination to another.

Landmarks around the world are portrayed on the packaging to express how the on-the-go palette is a travel companion along with eye pencil, lipstick and all-nighter from the Born to Run collection.

“Generally, when women do their make-up, they are likely to match shades with clothing,” noted Thitiphan. “Co-ordinating the make-up with the location or destination just makes it more fun, which is what Urban Decay’s beauty with an edge is all about.”

Sweeping golden hues, for instance, evokes the glory of Bangkok, whereas cool blue and green shades lend ocean vibes to eyelids when by the sea, such as in Phuket.
